Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radios
UHF radios are a type of walkie-talkie that operates wirelessly using UHF signals. As with other types of walkie-talkies, each UHF radio unit uses radio waves on a single, shared frequency band.
UHF radios consist of a transmitter/receiver and antenna for sending and receiving radio waves. Different types of radio will include different features, such as a loudspeaker or a microphone. UHF radios come in a variety of sizes and provide an effective and versatile means of communication in commercial, industrial and public sites.
UHF radios generally have four to five watts of transmitting power. They are commonly used by first responders like police officers and paramedics. They’re also frequently used by security and logistics personnel and across the events and leisure management sector.
What does UHF Stand for?
UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency and is the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) designation for radio frequencies in the 300 MHz to 3 GHz range. These frequencies are used for television broadcasting, and satellite communication including GPS, cell phones, cordless phones and two-way radios as well as many other applications.
One reason for the popularity of UHF for such a wide range of applications and services is that the antenna needed for UFH transmissions is smaller in size and therefore less conspicuous than what might be required for lower frequencies. One slight disadvantage is that UHF has a shorter broadcast range than VHF.
Why choose a UHF Radio?
UHF radios are ideally suited for use indoors because their shorter wavelength is more effective when it comes to penetrating through steel and concrete. Unlike VHF signals, UHF radio signals degrade less when they are used indoors, making them more reliable.
UHF radios perform consistently across indoor sites making them the perfect choice in shopping centres or office blocks.
Are there any disadvantages?
UHF walkie-talkie radios have a shorter range than VHF radios which can be problematic for some particular uses. As a rule, however, UHF radios provide effective and reliable communication for a wide range of purposes, particularly when used indoors across smaller sites where other forms of communication are less readily available or immediate.
